How to Care for & Store Your Jewelry the Right Way

The small habits that keep your pieces looking brand new  season after season.

✦ JUNE 2025✦ 5 MIN READ✦ CARE GUIDE

Your jewelry is only as beautiful as the care it receives. The difference between a piece that lasts years and one that dulls within weeks is not price  it is habit. These are the habits that matter.

WHY IT MATTERS

Good Care Multiplies the Life of Every Piece

Artificial jewelry is crafted with plated metals, alloy bases, and set stones  all of which respond to how they are treated. Moisture, chemicals, friction, and heat are the four great enemies of fashion jewelry. Understand what harms your pieces, and avoiding it becomes second nature.

The good news: caring for artificial jewelry requires no special products or professional attention. A few simple, consistent habits are all it takes to keep your Zorah collection looking freshly unboxed every time you open your drawer.

ALWAYS DO

Remove jewelry before washing hands, bathing, or swimming

Store pieces individually in pouches or compartments

Put jewelry on last  after perfume, lotion, and hairspray

Wipe pieces with a soft dry cloth after every wear

Store away from direct sunlight and heat sources

Keep in a cool, dry place  ideally with anti-tarnish lining

NEVER DO

Never spray perfume directly onto or near jewelry

Never pile pieces together  scratches are permanent

Never sleep in your jewelry  friction causes plating to wear

Never use abrasive cloths or harsh chemical cleaners

Never submerge stone-set pieces in water

Never store in plastic bags  they trap moisture inside

STEP BY STEP

Your Daily Jewelry Routine

1

Before getting dressed  apply everything first

Perfume, moisturiser, hairspray, and any other products should be fully dry and absorbed before you put on a single piece. Chemicals in these products are the leading cause of premature tarnishing in fashion jewelry.

2

During the day  treat your pieces gently

Remove rings before washing hands. Avoid touching stones repeatedly  natural oils from your skin accumulate and dull their surface over time. If you apply hand cream, remove rings first and replace them after the cream has absorbed.

3

After wearing  wipe before storing

Before returning any piece to storage, give it a gentle wipe with a soft, dry cloth. This removes skin oils, product residue, and any light moisture  the three things that most quickly degrade plating and finish.

4

Storage  give each piece its own space

Never pile jewelry together. Individual pouches, small compartment trays, or the original Zorah packaging are ideal. Anti-tarnish strips placed in your jewelry box extend the life of every piece stored inside it.

 THE ZORAH EDIT

SPECIFIC PIECES

Special Care for Specific Jewelry Types

Chains and necklaces tangle easily  always unclasp and lay flat before storing. Never ball a chain up in a rush; knots can stretch and weaken the links. A flat velvet tray or hanging hook system works beautifully for longer pieces.

Earrings with stone settings need particular attention around the setting itself. Grime accumulates where the metal meets the stone  a soft, dry toothbrush run very lightly around the setting once a week keeps it clear without risking the adhesive underneath.

Bangles and cuffs are the most resilient of all jewelry types  their solid form means they are less susceptible to structural damage. Store them upright in a roll or in individual slots to prevent surface scratching.

TRAVELLING

How to Travel With Your Collection

One of the great advantages of artificial jewelry is travelling with it stress-free. No declaring at customs, no anxiety about hotel safes, no fear of loss. That said, travel does introduce particular risks  compression, humidity, and vibration from luggage.

Pack each piece in its individual pouch, then group pouches in a small dedicated jewelry roll or case. Never pack jewelry loose in a bag alongside keys, coins, or other hard objects. For long-haul travel, carry your most loved pieces in your hand luggage rather than checked bags.
